Family Day celebrates familial values and was first introduced in Ontario on February 18, 2008, as a provincial public holiday by Premier Dalton McGuinty of the Liberal Party. To this day, it is continuously observed on the third Monday of every February.
Although not a national holiday, many provinces have adopted the holiday including Alberta (where Family Day originated from), British Colombia, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan. Other provinces observe holidays on the third Monday of every February, however, for different rationales. Prince Edward Island celebrates Islander Day, simply for relaxation purposes. Manitoba commemorates Louis Riel Day, a day of political and First Nations acknowledgement. Nova Scotia observes Heritage Day, a day of honouring prominent Nova Scotians each year. In addition, Ontario Family Day coincides with the United States of America’s Presidents’ Day which is also celebrated on the third Monday of every February, around the time of George Washinton’s birthday.
Economically, due to some interprovincial and international trade and business, Family Day works well. Giving many sectors a peaceful day away from work knowing their counterparts are doing the same.
Family Day covered a gap in the annum which did not provide for a public holiday. This not only improves family/tourist destination locations but also ensures that families will not lose any employment income, as a result, of the time off. Many Ontarians should explore parts of the Niagara region either for some relaxing views near Niagara-on-the-Lake or youthly fun on Clifton Hill near the Falls. Driving out north near Blue Mountain or Algonquin, if weather and energy levels permit. Or simply, enjoying the inner City of Toronto for its impressive skyline, diverse restaurants, and rich culture.
Remember, there is an “I” in Family Day. During the day, one should take an opportunity for gratitude and to self-reflect. Which can be later shared with family and friends, making for great moments and healthy conversations.
Nonetheless, whatever reason the Ontario government decided to give you the day off or however way one wishes to spend Family Day, it is a time for reflection, relaxation, and enjoying the precious moments with family and friends.
Wishing joyous moments upon you and your families.
