Human Rights Day commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948, and it is observed each year on December 10.
The UDHR confirms the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, colour, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
This is the most translated document in the world, translated into 577 languages from Abkhaz to Zulu.
Observing Human Rights Day provides a time to recognize not only the commonality of our human condition, and that we are equal, but also the need to protect vulnerable individuals and communities and to ensure justice and fairness for all.
OTLA is dedicated to representing the rights of individuals who have suffered injury and harm due to the wrongdoing of others. Our principles align with the principles represented by Human Rights Day, as our members advocate for access to justice and fair compensation for the rights of injured Ontarians, including those who are marginalized, to ensure that such rights are respected and enforced within our legal system. OTLA’s mission reinforces the idea that everyone deserves and equal opportunity to seek redress and accountability, a cornerstone of human rights.
On Human Rights Day 2024, OTLA is deeply committed to fulfilling its responsibility in safeguarding the fundamental rights recognized on this important day. Through the practice of our members, we seek to ensure that fairness is championed, as well as accountability and respect for the rule of law, and in doing so, that human rights are meaningfully upheld in the everyday lives of Ontarians.
Wishing you a reflective and meaningful Human Rights Day.
